Comparing Two Reliable Multicast Protocols for Mobile Computing
نویسندگان
چکیده
As networks with mobile devices becorne commonplace, many new applications for those networks arisc, including some that require coordination among groups of mobile clients. One basic tool for implementing coordination is reliable multicast, where delivery of a multicast message is atomic, i.e. cither all or none of the group members deliver the message. While several multicast protocols have been proposed for mobile networks, only a few works have considered reliable multicats. In this paper we present and compare two protocols based on Two-Phase-Commit that implement reliable multicast for structured mobile networks. Protocol iAMC is a variant of protocol AMC that employs a two-level hierarchical location management scheme to locate and route messages to the mobile hosts addressed by a multicast. Although hierarchical location management is not new in the context of mobile and cellular networks, we are unaware of any other work which combines hierarchical location management with protocols for reliable multicast. We have prototyped, simulated and evaluated both protocols using the MobiCS simulation enviromment. Our experiments indicate that despite some overhead incurred by the location management and the additional level of message redirection, iAMC is more efficient than the AMC protocol and scales well with the size of the wired network infra-structure.

متن کاملReliable Mobile Multicast Transport for Multimedia Content Delivery
Efficient reliable multicast transport reducing the receiver processing overhead and allowing seamless continuation of the multicast service in case of handover is a challenge of today broadband infrastructures including content and mobile networks, The focus of this paper are protocol mechanisms aimed at scalable reliable point-to-multipoint content delivery from access routers to the attached...
متن کاملAn Analysis Comparison of Reliability Mechanisms for Improving Reliable Mobile Multicast Protocols
Existing reliable multicast protocols are designed to perform well in wired networking environments. However, in mobile networking environments, these reliable mobile multicast protocols are not optimal as they do not take into account the limitations of power (energy), storage capacity, processing power, impairments of wireless communication channels, and the frequent changes of location and t...
متن کاملA Literature Review of Recent Developments in Reliable Multicast Error Handling
As the number of applications directed towards group collaboration and group media dissemination increases, the interest for multicast protocols has also grown during recent years. Several applications have a need for reliability. This is true for the use of shared network editors, shared white-boards, networked games, etc. An increased popularity of media and application distribution over the ...
متن کاملOn the Structuring of Reliable Multicast Protocols for Distributed Mobile Systems
We consider reliable multicast in distributed systems including mobile hosts (MHs) that communicate with a wired infrastructure by means of wireless links. Nearly all existing proposals are based on hand-off, i.e. whenever a MH switches cell, state information about this host travels across the wired network from the support station of the old cell to that of the new cell. However, we are not a...
